Cliffs everywhere

The Gorge's arches and overlooks have long unfenced drops. Stay on trail and keep little ones within arm's reach.

Parking fills early

The Natural Bridge lot fills fast on weekends. Arrive before 9 am, especially in October.

No hiking fees

Natural Bridge State Resort Park charges no entry fee for its grounds or trails. The Sky Lift is ticketed and seasonal.

Day 1 of 2

Saturday: bridges in the sky

The big arch in the morning, pizza at lunch, two easy arch walks in the afternoon.

  1. Natural Bridge via the Original Trail

About 0.75 miles each way with a steady climb over roots and rock. You can walk right across the top of the arch.

Alyssa's note Short on legs? Ride the Sky Lift up and hike down. Check this season's lift hours.

  2. Miguel's Pizza

A Slade institution and climbers' hangout. Build-your-own pies and a big porch.

  3. Sky Bridge Loop

A 0.75-mile loop: walk across a stone bridge, then take the stairs down to walk underneath it.

Alyssa's note Steep drops sit beside the bridge, so hold hands on top.

  4. Angel Windows

An easy half-mile walk to two small arches kids can see through. Look, don't climb.

  5. Nada Tunnel

Drive through a one-lane, unlit tunnel blasted through the rock for a logging railroad more than a century ago. Headlights on, windows down.

Day 2 of 2

Sunday: water and stone

A creekside arch, coffee and the drive home.

  1. Rock Bridge Loop

A 1.3-mile loop to the area's one arch with a stream running beneath it.

Alyssa's note Moderate, with stairs and roots. Slick after rain.

  2. Whistling Arch

A flat half-mile walk to a small arch and an overlook. A good last one for tired legs.

  3. Daniel Boone Coffee Shop

Coffee and snacks for the road before the 2-hour drive home.
