Weekend escape from Louisville · Jefferson Memorial Forest

Jefferson Memorial Forest

The forest where Alyssa grew up, twenty-five minutes from downtown

Morning sun through tall trees over a grassy forest path
Morning light in the woods

About 6,600 acres of steep wooded knobs on Louisville's southern edge, with a fishing lake, accessible trails for the littlest hikers, ridge loops for the bigger ones, and family camping. It's the place Alyssa grew up exploring, and the easiest weekend escape on this list.

Camping

Day 1 of 2

Day one: lake, trees and a ridge loop

Start easy at the lake, picnic, then pick a loop that fits your crew.

  1. Welcome Center

Grab a trail map and ask staff what's in good shape this week. There's a small shop with hiking supplies and nature books.

  2. Tulip Tree Trail at Tom Wallace

A 0.3-mile accessible concrete path, perfect for strollers and toddlers on foot. Then try fishing at Tom Wallace Lake.

  3. Picnic at Tom Wallace Recreation Area

Picnic tables, grills and restrooms right by the lake. Pack lunch from home.

  4. Scott's Gap

Two choices from one trailhead: a new 0.6-mile accessible loop, or the 3.3-mile loop (moderate to strenuous, with a shortcut) for older kids.

Alyssa's note The western end of the forest is quieter and good for birding. Bring binoculars.

Day 2 of 2

Day two: Horine and a falls permit

Wake up at Horine if you camped, or come back for a morning on the steeper trails.

  1. Horine Reservation trails

Moderate to strenuous loops that climb the knobs. Cooler and quieter early.

Alyssa's note The Yost Ridge connector links Horine and the Welcome Center for a longer day.

  2. Fairmount Falls

Hiking to Fairmount Falls requires a free permit from the Welcome Center. Pick it up on day one and ask staff for the route.

  3. Home for a nap

One of the perks of an escape this close: you're in your own bed by early afternoon.
